Sea Turtle Hatchery : Mirissa

Watch turtles in their natural habitat… you may even get to see turtles laying eggs in the evening hours. The Turtle Conservation Project is the only place where turtles are not held in captivity and therefore we strongly recommend that you visit this location instead of other hatcheries.Located only ten minutes away from Villa The Milla, a day’s notice is required for a visit. Set a date to see the five species of turtles found in Sri Lanka and the survival threats that turtles face.

Hikkaduwa and Kosgoda located some sea turtle hatcheries, a totally nonprofit program to conserve this endangered animal. In most of nights, the officers of the hatcheries collect the turtle eggs and protect them until the babies are come out. Up to proper age limit, the owners manage the small babies and when correct times reach they release the turtle to water. It is a great scenery to watch also upon your request there is availability for volunteer works.

Within Sri Lanka, there were 05 varieties of turtles have been recorded. Most of the turtles nesting their habitats around Southern Province with that main reason more hatcheries are located in this area. Hatcheries secure the lives of turtles as well as eggs, during the past Sri Lankan government had been imposed many rules and regulations to protect the turtles
